Wie ist der Pentateuch, sofern er nicht zur Priesterschrift gehört, entstanden? Wurden durchlaufende Quellen kombiniert? Oder wurden kleinere Einheiten zu größeren Blöcken zusammengefügt, bis schließlich redaktionelle Stellen den Pentateuch als Ganzen überblicken? Die hier erstmals im Druck vorliegende Untersuchung von 1972 – «aus der ganz frühen Phase der kritischen Anfragen an die bis dahin fraglos gültige Drei-Quellen-Theorie» (R. Albertz) – setzt an den Querverweisen zwischen den Überlieferungen an. Sie stellt das Quellenmodell in Frage und plädiert für eine überlieferungsgeschichtliche Lösung. Der deuteronomistischen Redaktion weist sie dabei eine Schlüsselrolle für die Gesamtkomposition zu. In einem Geleitwort nimmt R. Albertz eine forschungsgeschichtliche Einordnung der Arbeit vor.
