Das Buch des heute in Yale lehrenden Hebraisten und Literaturwissenschaftlers befaßt sich mit den Wandlungsprozessen, die das moderne Judentum weltweit charakterisieren, und mit dem Wiederaufleben der hebräischen Sprache, die beide zusammengehören: Der Autor versteht den Beginn der Herausbildung einer eigentümlich jüdischen Literatur in hebräischer Sprache um 1881 als Anfang einer sozialen und kulturellen Revolution, nicht als Ideengeschichte mit vorrangiger Betrachtung des Zionismus: Dieser wird überhaupt erst durch die Wiederbelebung der alten hebräischen Sprache durch eine intellektuelle Avantgarde möglich. Der Entwurf einer neuen Gesellschaft, neuer ökonomischer, staatlicher Modelle für Erez Israel setzt die Entwicklung des Neu-Hebräischen aus der biblischen zu einer Gegenwarts-Sprache voraus.
