Um es vorwegzunehmen: Die Autorin kann schreiben, unterhaltsam, lebendig und historisch sensibel (s. zuletzt die "Australierin"-Trilogie). Doch die auf 500 Seiten!) ausgebreitete Geschichte der standesgemäßen Kindheit und Jugend einer ostpreußischen Großgrundbesitzerstochter ist eher banal. Natürlich ist Frederike hübsch und patent, tierlieb und freundlich zu "ihrem" Personal. Auch ihre kinderreiche Familie ist sympathisch, Mutter managt den Gutshaushalt und gibt viele große Gesellschaften, Vater verwaltet die Ländereien. Über die politisch schwierigen Jahre nach dem 1. Weltkrieg im geteilten Ostpreußen erfährt man fast nichts. Die alte Gutsbesitzerskaste reitet, jagt, feiert, heiratet (natürlich nur unter ihresgleichen) offenbar in alter Pracht und Herrlichkeit. Das Junker-Dasein mit seinen Freuden und Pflichten wurde andernorts bereits verschiedentlich authentischer geschildert, z.B. von Marion Gräfin Dönhoff. Die "Familiensaga" endet 1929 mit der hochherrschaftlichen Hochzeit Frederikes. Eine Fortsetzung ist angekündigt, die eigentlich politischer und interessanter werden müsste.
