Dieser offizielle Katalog zur Amsterdamer Ausstellung "Vincents Wahl" zeigt einen Van Gogh von einer ganz anderen Seite. Rekonstruiert wird in vielen Beiträgen das Kunstempfinden des Künstlers, sein Literaturinteresse, welche Künstler ihn begeisterten und den Einfluss, den sie auf sein Werk ausgeübt haben. Die inhaltlich zweigeteilte Publikation enthält im 1. Teil 10 Essays über Van Goghs Kunsterlebnis und sein künstlerisches Streben. Abgeschlossen wird der Teil mit einem großen Anmerkungsapparat und einer Bibliographie. Der 2. Teil zeigt Van Goghs "Musée imaginaire" mit rund 150 exemplarischen Werken von 75 Künstlern (Klassiker und Zeitgenossen) für die sich der Künstler interessierte und die ihn angeregt haben. Anhand von 30 Arbeiten Van Goghs wird dies demonstriert. Im Anhang eine Liste der ausgestellten Werke. Chronologie des Künstlers als Kunstbetrachter und Leser, Register.
