Bricha, das hebräische Wort für Flucht, ist die Bezeichnung für die Massenwanderung von Juden nach der Befreiung 1945. Der Bricha schlossen sich nicht nur die Juden an, die auf deutschem oder österreichischem Boden befreit worden waren und nun in Camps als Displaced Persons (DPs) auf die Auswanderung warteten, sondern auch jene, die in ihren ehemaligen Heimatländern in Osteuropa erneut Pogrome und Hass erlebten. Es wurden Dokumente gefälscht, Grenzbeamte bestochen, Sitzstreiks und Demonstrationen organisiert und die überlebenden Juden über abenteuerliche Routen bis nach Frankreich und Italien gebracht, von wo Schiffe nach Palästina ablegten. Asher Ben-Natan war zwischen Sommer 1945 und Juli 1947 Kommandant der Bricha in Österreich. Es gelang ihm mit Chuzpe und Herz, scharfer Zunge und Intellekt, die Menschenströme durch die Zonen zu geleiten, die Alliierten zu überlisten und die österreichische Bürokratie zu umgehen. Davon erzählt er ebenso unterhaltsam wie spannend, bewegend wie lehrreich gelebte und lebendige Geschichte, die gerade auch junge Leser ansprechen wird, die sich für jüdische Geschichte und die Geschichte des Staates Israel interessieren. Dieses Buch ergibt zusammen mit Brücken bauen aber nicht vergessen ein Gesamtbild vom Wirken Ben-Natans im Nachkriegseuropa. (AUT)
