Im ersten Teilband sind die Briefe bis 1913 zusammengefasst, die hauptsächlich an seine Eltern und seinen Bruder gerichtet sind. Auffällig, wie schon bei Thomas Mann in den Buddenbrooks beschrieben, wird auch von Rathenau das Elternhaus unter dem Aspekt der beklemmenden Familienaufsicht erfahren. Geprägt wird sein junges Leben von seinem Vater, von dem er das Geld für seine Studien erhält und hierzu gewissenhaft Rechenschaft ablegt. Allmählich stemmt er sich dagegen und versucht sich, zu verselbständigen. Hierbei wird der Ausbruch in das schweizerische Neuhausen, wo er sich als technischer Berater verdingt, zu einer tiefgreifenden Erfahrung für sein Leben.
