Der wiederaufkeimende Nationalismus rund um den Globus stellt die Wissenschaft erneut vor jene grundlegende Frage, mit der Ernest Renan in seiner Vorlesung von 1882 die moderne Nationalismusforschung begründete: Was ist eine Nation? Zweifellos benötigt eine Nation, die Benedict Anderson als „vorgestellte Gemeinschaft“ bezeichnete, eine gemeinsame Vorstellung der eigenen Gemeinschaft, für deren Aufbau oftmals die staatliche Schule eine wichtige Rolle spielt. In dieser Untersuchung wird die Rolle der staatlichen Bildung für den Aufbau und die Festigung einer österreichischen Nationalstaatsideologie zwischen 1918 und 1938 beleuchtet. Dabei wird deutlich, dass viele Aspekte der zeitgenössischen österreichischen Nationalstaatsidee bereits in der Zeit zwischen den Weltkriegen vorweggenommen wurde.
