In Verbindung mit der Fernsehserie "Wunder der Erde" des Hessischen Rundfunks entstand dieses informative und gleichzeitig unterhaltsame, thematisch breit angelegte Werk über Bären. Nach einleitenden Kapiteln über das Verhältnis von Mensch und Bär und über den Bären in der Werbung werden die verschiedenen Bärenarten vorgestellt, vom Höhlenbären über Braunbär, Eisbär, Bären im Tropenwald und in Amerika, kleine Bären und Pandas bis zu "Bären, die keine sind". Dabei zeigen die Autoren anschaulich, warum Bären zwar auf der Beliebtheitsskala des Menschen ganz oben stehen, aber dennoch teilweise vom Aussterben bedroht sind. Das flüssig zu lesende, reich illustrierte und ansprechend gestaltete Werk entstand in Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftlern, Journalisten und Filmemachern. Inhaltlich vergleichbar dem leider schon vergriffenen "Bärenstark" (BA 5/96) kann auch dieses Werk breit empfohlen werden. (2 S) [Michael Mücke]
