Keine umfassende Familiengeschichte der Bernstorffs, sondern Skizzierung der Lebensläufe von acht bedeutenden Vertretern der Familie, die sich seit dem 17. Jahrhundert auf dem europäischen Parkett hervortaten. Am Anfang steht Andreas von Bernstorff, der gegen Ende des Dreißigjährigen Krieges als Domherr von Ratzeburg an den Friedensverhandlungen in Osnabrück teilnahm. Im 18. Jahrhundert waren drei Bernstorffs maßgeblich an der Schaffung des dänischen Gesamtstaates beteiligt, und im 19. Jahrhundert standen zwei in preußischen bzw. kaiserlichen Diensten. Das Widerstandsschicksal Albrechts von Bernstorff gegen die Nationalsozialisten bildet den Abschluss des mit farbigen Abbildungen hübsch illustrierten Bändchens. (I. Hanewald)
