Singles sind vielen ein Ärgernis. Das Unbehagen beginnt schon bei den Sozialstatistikern, die diese Gruppe nicht recht einzuordnen vermögen und bei Auszählungen hilfsweise auf die amtlicherseits vorgegebenen Bestimmungen 'ledig' und 'Einpersonenhaushalte' zurückgreifen müssen. Und es findet sich verstärkt bei einigen Bevölkerungswissenschaftlern, die genau zu wissen scheinen, was von den Motiven dieser Lebensform zu halten ist, z. B. : "Kontaktschwäche und Ausnutzung von Beziehungen reichen sich die Hände. " 1 Singles sind anderen dagegen eine rechte Freude. Ihr vermutetes Wohlbefinden bringt kräftige Farbtupfer mit sich. Die Medien - in deren Reihen sich nicht wenige Exemplare dieser Spezies tummeln dürften - werfen mit schöner Regelmäßigkeit Titelgeschichten, Specials und ganze Serien dazu auf den Markt. Offensichtlich vermuten sie eine weiter lebhafte Nachfrage ihrer Leser-, Hörer- und Zuschauerschaft daran, eine noch unbefriedigte Neugier der einen am alternativen Lebensentwurf, der anderen an der Darstellung der eigenen, neuen Existenzweise. Es dürften die darob ausgeschickten Journalisten gelegentlich kräftig an den Stories mitgestaltet haben. Denn bei einer Großzahl der dabei auftauchenden Fragen war zumeist nur soviel klar, daß noch nicht besonders viel klar sein konnte. Auch neuere Arbeiten zuständiger Fachdisziplinen zum Thema Singles müssen einräumen, daß es "bislang kaum empirische Untersuchungen dazu gibt" 2, wundern sich, daß "dies kaum als ein soziologisch relevantes Thema betrachtet worden" 3 ist oder "wie wenig sich die Sozialwissenschaften mit diesem Phänomen beschäftigt haben". 4 Das Erstaunen über die lange wissenschaftliche Inkubationszeit ist nachvollziehbar
