Im Vorwort des vorbildlichen Fachbuches stellen die Herausgeber der Reihe die 2 entscheidenden Fragen: "Afrika, ein von Bürgerkriegen geschüttelter, marginalisierter Kontinent, der im Prozess wirtschaftlicher Globalisierung zunehmend in Vergessenheit gerät? Oder aber haben die Staaten Afrikas Entwicklungspotentiale, die auf eine bessere wirtschaftliche und demokratische Zukunft hoffen lassen?" Die an der Uni Hamburg lehrenden Afrika-Experten versuchen dies tiefgründig und plausibel, vor allem mit ausgewählten Länderbeispielen, zu beantworten. Es gelingt den Autoren, gängige Klischees zu korrigieren und dem Kontinent, knapp 50 Jahre nach "Entlassung" der meisten Staaten in die Unabhängigkeit, eine halbwegs positive Prognose zu attestieren. Die Basis dieses Lehrbuches bildete nebenbei ein Kurs die Fernuniversität Hagen; Zielgruppe sind Studenten und wohl auch Schüler der gymnasialen Oberstufe. Sehr umfangreiche Bibliographie.
