Es wird deutlich, dass auf allen Seiten und an allen Fronten gegen das Kriegsvölkerrecht verstossen wurde. Das war in den Weltkriegen nicht anders als in den Entkolonialisierungskriegen, im Golfkrieg und beim Zerfall Jugoslawiens in den neunziger Jahren. Zu den bekannten Stichworten des Zweiten Weltkriegs, der als umfassender Vernichtungskrieg die meisten Kriegsverbrechen aufweist, gehören auf deutscher Seite Babij Jar, Lidice, Oradour und Malmedy, auf sowjetischer Seite Feodosia, Grischino, Katyn und Nemmersdorf sowie auf westalliierter Seite Mers-el-Kebir, Monte Cassino, Annecy und Dresden.
