Wohl keiner könnte seinem Landsmann William Blake (1757-1827) ein solches brillantes literarisches Denkmal setzen wie der britische Autor Ackroyd. Auf über 400 Seiten skizziert er ein umfassendes und lebhaftes Porträt des außergewöhnlichen Dichters, Malers und Kupferstechers, der zur Ausschmückung seiner Poesie und seines visionären Weltbildes sogar eine eigene Kupferstichtechnik entwickelte, die ihm brillante Illustrationen ermöglichte. Ackroyd gestaltet das Künstler- als ein Sittenporträt der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Der Leser kann den für sein Genie geschätzten wie für seine Exzentrik belächelten Künstler auf seinem Leben durch das London seiner Zeit begleiten. Trotz Materialfülle und Detailreichtum bleibt die Lektüre unterhaltsam, setzt aber guten Leseatem voraus. Mit Bildteil, kommentierter Biografie und Personen- und Sachregister. Das - hochgelobte - Original erschien bereits 1996, vorliegende Übersetzung könnte den hierzulande wenig bekannten britischen Romantiker (vgl. D.
