Als orthodoxer Jude in dem schwäbischen Dorf Nordstetten bei Horb aufgewachsen, entscheidet sich Berthold Auerbach (1812-1882) religiös wie politisch für den Liberalismus und schlägt eine Schriftstellerkarriere ein. Mit seinen ersten beiden Romanen zu explizit jüdischen Themen scheitert er. Erst 1843, als er in seinen Dorfgeschichten aktuelle jüdische Fragestellungen - wie die der gesellschaftlichen Marginalisierung - in den nichtjüdischen Bereich überträgt, gelingt ihm der Durchbruch zum Erfolg. Auf der Basis des 52 Jahre währenden intimen Briefwechsels, den der Schriftsteller mit seinem Cousin Jakob Auerbach führte, widmet sich das Buch der Frage, ob und wie weit es Auerbach als deutsch-jüdischem Schriftsteller gelungen ist, Eingang in die deutsche Gesellschaft zu finden. 〈dt.〉
