Zum 100. Geburtstag Albert Ehrensteins (1886-1950) erscheint zum erstenmal eine umfassende, aus den Quellen erarbeitete Studie über diesen weitgehend unbekannt gebliebenen Schriftsteller. Der "Hoffnungsstern" seiner aus engen Verhältnissen stammenden Eltern versuchte, sich in der deutschen Literatur zu behaupten - wie seine älteren Vorbilder, Förderer und späteren Gegner Schnitzler und Karl Kraus, blieb aber ein "unnützer Mensch", ein "Exterritorialer" selbst unter Aussenseitern: den Juden Deutsch-Österreichs. Ehrensteins "schneidende Energie des Ausdrucks" (Arno Schmidt) hielt dennoch selbst seinen bittersten Erfahrungen stand - bis zum elenden Ende im New Yorker Exil.
