Der vorliegende Band versammelt die Vorträge des Michael-Hamburger-Symposiums, das am 3. und 4. Juni 1987 im Deutsch-Amerikanischen Institut Heidelberg als Hommage für den Dichter, Übersetzer und Kritiker Michael Hamburger stattfand. Harald Hartungs Porträt von Michael Hamburger eröffnet den Band. Die daran anschliessenden Beiträge gelten vor allem den Gedichten und Übersetzungen Hamburgers, die von folgenden Autoren interpretiert werden: Richard Anders, David Constantine, Walter Eckel, Andreas Gardt, Elmar Schenkel, Theodor Scheufele und Joachim Utz. Beschlossen wird der Band mit grundsätzlichen Überlegungen Hans Georg Gadamers zum literarischen Übersetzen und mit einer Bibliographie der Buchveröffentlichungen Michael Hamburgers, die Günther Hasenkamp zusammenstellte.
