Lange ist der russische Autor (1892-1968) nicht mehr aufgelegt oder besprochen worden (zuletzt BA 184, 5 und 194, 86). Nun bringt der Eichborn-Verlag den 3. und 4. Band der 6-bändigen Autobiografie Paustowskijs neu heraus, in einem Band zusammengefasst. Paustowskij ist 1917 ein 25-jähriger Vagabund, den die russische Revolution in Kiew überrascht und der von den alles umwälzenden Ereignissen in ihren Strudel gezogen wird. Er beschreibt oft in grotesken oder ironischen Szenen den Überlebenskampf der Menschen, sein eigenes Sich-Durchlavieren, den Hunger, die Blockade von Odessa. Dazwischen Schilderungen bekannter und unbekannter Zeitgenossen. Gerade in der ironischen Brechung werden die politischen Ereignisse besonders nahe gebracht, die totale Anarchie, das Wüten entmenschlichter Soldaten. Paustowskij ist zu Unrecht vergessen worden und verdient eine (Wieder-)Anschaffung in vielen Bibliotheken. Hier allerdings ärgerlich: das völlige Fehlen eines Anmerkungsapparates.
