Einen breiten, praxisbezogenen Überblick erhalten Studenten und Praktiker der Geowissenschaften sowie Lehrer und alle, die sich für Meteorologie interessieren. Die Entstehung, Zusammensetzung und die ökologische Bedeutung der Atmosphäre werden beschrieben, Erscheinungsformen und Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Wassers besprochen und die Bedeutung des Luftdruckes dargelegt. Aus der Temperaturschichtung leitet der Autor die Ausbreitungsbedingungen für Luftverunreinigungen ab und führt über die Diskussion der Strahlung in den Energiehaushalt der Erde ein. Die Windsysteme und ihre Entstehung werden erläutert, woraus sich die allgemeine Zirkulation der Atmosphäre ableitet, die zusammen mit Hoch- und Tiefdruckgebieten das Gerüst für die großen Klimazonen bildet.
