In der Nähe des früheren Kriegsgefangenenlagers und Konzentrationslagers Bergen-Belsen befindet sich eine der größten Kriegsgräberstätten in Deutschland. Hier ruhen 20000 sowjetische Soldaten, die in den Jahren 1941 bis 1945 in Bergen-Belsen ums Leben kamen.
