1994 jährte sich der Tod des 1872 geborenen Piet Mondrian zum 50. Mal. Der Teil zum "wegweisenden Vorkämpfer des 20. Jhs für eine neue, abstrakte Kunst" nimmt etwa 2 Drittel dieses Bandes ein. Daß der als Mondrian-Kenner ausgewiesene Autor auch als freier Journalist arbeitet, kommt der Lesbarkeit zugute. Lieder fehlen bibliographische Nachweise. Im 1. Drittel des durchgängig zahlreich illustrierten Bandes skizziert Hulst Zentren des niederländischen Kunstgeschehens (Den Haag, Amsterdam) und ihre Protagonisten einschließlich der Bewegung De Stijl. Kleine und mittlere Bibliotheken sollten zugreifen (preisgünstig), da der Band über Mondrian hinausweist. In großstädtischen Bibliotheken neben vertiefenden - allerdings meist älteren - Monographien und H. L. Jaffé (BA 3/91) empfohlen. (2) (Gabriele Esser)
