Acht Jahrzehnte nach Fertigstellung 1943 im US-Exil erscheint dieses Manuskript aus dem Nachlass von Friedrich Stampfer. Er war seit 1916 Chefredakteur des „Vorwärts“ gewesen und gehörte als Vorstandsmitglied zu den 94 SPD-Abgeordneten, die am 23. März 1933 gegen Hitlers Ermächtigungsgesetz stimmten. Dieses Buch kann als zeitgenössische Ergänzung der im englischen Exil entstandenen Geschichte der Weimarer Republik von Arthur Rosenberg gelten, der die Ereignisse nach 1923 nur knapp behandelte. Hingegen liegt Stampfers Hauptinteresse nach Einbeziehung der Vor- und Frühgeschichte auf einer Gegenüberstellung der Weimarer relativen Stabilisierungs- mit der anschließenden Krisenperiode sowie der Zerstörung des Erreichten unter der NS-Diktatur. Ein detaillierter Ausblick auf die 1943 für Stampfer absehbare Zeit nach Hitler rundet die in solcher Form besondere Darstellung ab. Als Publizist mit vielen Kontakten vermochte dieser Autor auch hinter Kulissen zu schauen, was dem Text sein eigenes Profil verschafft.
