Die Informationsfülle macht es nach Ansicht des Herausgebers der vorliegenden Bände oft schwer, durch die Oberfläche von Ereignisschilderungen hindurch die Zusammenhänge zu sehen und einzelne Konflikte einzuordnen und damit zu verstehen. Die vorliegenden Darstellungen und Analysen von rund 250 Grundkonflikten der Nachkriegszeit, die sich wiederum in etwa 500 Einzelkonflikte mit unterschiedlicher Intensität und unterschiedlichen Beteiligten aufschlüsseln lassen, soll zum tieferen Verständnis der oftmals aus komplexen Ursachen resultierenden Ereignissen beitragen. Eine beträchtliche Zahl der Konflikte (ca 70) ist heute noch ungelöst; sie werden somit auch in Zukunft eine Rolle spielen und Aktualität erlangen. Zu Europa werden insgesamt 35 Staaten gerechnet, die zum geographischen Begriff des vom Atlantik zum Ural reichenden Territoriums Europas gehören. Von den insgesamt 48 im europäischen Raum registrierten Grundkonflikten der Nachkriegszeit haben lediglich zwei als Kriege zu bezeichnende gewaltsame Konflikte stattgefunden. Die übrigen Konflikte verliefen unterhalb der Schwelle organisierter Gewalt zwischen zwei etwa gleich starken Parteien. Der europäische Kontinent gehört damit seit 1945 zu den vergleichsweise gewaltarmen Kontinenten, was zum einen damit erklärt werden könnte, dass hier der blutigste Krieg aller Zeiten ausgefochten worden war; zum anderen aber damit, dass die zahlreichen westeuropäischen Gemeinschaftsbildungen Streitigkeiten in der Mehrzahl auf Grenzkorrekturen und unbedeutendere territoriale Ansprüche reduzierten.(MOD)
