Die Ausstellung "Otto Nagel – Menschensucher und Sozialist" wird begleitet von einem ersten wissenschaftlichen Katalog zu Leben und Werk Otto Nagels, der in vier politischen Systemen Deutschlands seine Spuren hinterlassen hat. Auf der Basis von Recherchen in russischen und deutschen Archiven, insbesondere im Archiv Bildende Kunst der Akademie der Künste, Berlin, entdecken Sergey Fofanov, Eckhart Gillen, Michael Krejsa, Rosa von der Schulenburg und Kurt Winkler verblüffende neue Seiten seiner Persönlichkeit, z. B. seine Rolle als Kurator und Katalogautor der zweiten Station jener berühmten ersten deutschen Kunstausstellung 1925 in Saratow, der Hauptstadt der Wolgadeutschen Republik. Sie widerlegen die noch in der DDR verbreitete Legende vom Widerstandskämpfer, der Mal- und Ausstellungsverbot hatte, Monate im KZ verbringen musste und ständigen Hausdurchsuchungen ausgesetzt war. Früh schon, so erfahren wir, distanziert sich Otto Nagel von der Anti-Formalismus-Kampagne, vor allem aber öffnet er als Präsident die Ostberliner Akademie für Künstler seiner Generation aus dem Westen. Dies wurde ihm zum Verhängnis als die SED nach dem Mauerbau 1961 die Zügel anzog. Nagels Unterstützung für die im selben Jahr von Fritz Cremer initiierte Ausstellung „Junge Künstler“ bedeutete für ihn das Ende seiner Präsidentschaft. Er gab aber nicht kleinlaut bei, sondern verteidigte in Briefen an den Stellvertretenden Ministerpräsidenten der DDR, Alexander Abusch, mit Nachdruck seine Künstlerehre. Am Ende bleibt das Bild eines Künstlers zwischen Anpassung und Widerstand, der aber in seiner Porträtkunst bis an das Ende seines Lebens nur seiner eigenen Wahrnehmung vertraute.
