Content: The years of economic reform in the PRC have led to considerable changes in the old structures of socio-economic security. Drawing on interviews carried out by Monika Schädler and the author in April and May 1992 in Hainan, Shanghai and Beijing, she (the author) explores the implementation of social security system in Hainan Province, especially regarding some of the problems relating to the housing reform. She also outlines some of the problems M. Schädler and she came upon while discussing experiments with the introduction of pension insurance scheme in rural regions all over China. (DÜI-Sen)

Content: In respect to social security, employment is one of the basic factors as it is the most important source of individual income. In China, in keeping with the government's socialist ideology, the state has assumed direct responsibility for employment and until recently provided labour for all citizens. However, economic reforms aiming to introduce market-oriented elements have changed the situation in many respects. The authors examine the problem of unemployment in reform China. They note that in China, unemployment so far is not the major problem it has recently become in East European reform countries, or has already been for some decades in other developing countries. Content: First report from a large project involving eight Chinese researchers in ten villages, conducted under the author's (Feuchtwang's) supervision. The research was conducted in 1991 and 1992. Preliminary findings from only four of the ten villages are presented in this article. The purpose of the project is to inquire the different abilities of village households to raise resources for special events, including both negative and positive eventualities, where neighbours, kin and friends are parts of the potential network.
