Nikolaj Berdjaev (1874-1948), nach der Oktoberrevolution aus der Sowjetunion ausgewiesen, erlangte im Westen große Bekanntheit, da er als „Philosoph der Freiheit“ in den geistigen Auseinandersetzungen des 20. Jahrhunderts mit viel beachteten Schriften hervorgetreten ist. Sein spätes Werk „Die russische Idee“, eine religiös-philosophische Deutung Russlands, seines historischen Schicksals und seiner Bedeutung in der Welt, ist nach dem Ende der Sowjetunion in Russland nicht mehr verboten, sondern wird im Gegenteil dort hoch geschätzt.
