-- "With 32,000 fonts from 90 international libraries, the 1760-page work documents the current status of international writing. The FontBook contains all the (digitized) classics of print art as well as the most important modern writings - selected and cataloged by a 7-person editorial staff under the direction of Erik Spiekermann. Symbol fonts, non-Western and non-Latin fonts form separate chapters. More than 100,000 designer, year, language and supplier details and references to similar fonts make the FontBook an indispensable tool for professional typographers. For the similarity references, the renowned experts Yves Peters (Typographer.org) and Stephen Coles (Typographica) were recruited. Design and content enhancements make it easier to use the FontBook, which has grown by 30 percent. A 60-page table of contents listing suppliers and alternative font products replaces the once-separate FontFinder. In the main part, shortcuts for foreign languages, expert sets and cut variants provide a condensed representation of large families; Small caps and number variants are integrated into four-line reading patterns. In this way, once multi-sided large families "shrink" to the one-sided, small Werksatzfamilien come back to appropriate effect. Also new is the single-line headline display, which always comes into force when design details of a font in the 12-point display would be invisible. Many display fonts and script fonts now appear in a completely new light."

Content: "With over 10,000 typefaces plus Dingbats, Symbols and Non-Latins, the FontBook is the most comprehensive reference book for PostScript typefaces available. To meet the needs of the 20,000 plus owners of the present FontBook, we have decided to produce a second volume -- FontBook Volume 2 -- encompassing all new typefaces since its publication in November 1993. A new updated StyleFinder is enclosed with each FontBook, listing all the typefaces in both books alphabetically in one-line showings according to eight different style categories. The StyleFinder also shows in which of the two books a particular font can be found. A figure 1 or 2 is shown against the typeface name. Some products, for example CD-ROMs, are updated and changed too frequently for us to include full product descriptions in the FontBook. Your local FontShop can give you up-to-date information on these and all products which become available after publication of the FontBook."
