Mal voller Humor und Selbstironie, mal nachdenklich und melancholisch: Die Gedichte der 1896 in Breslau geborenen deutsch-jüdischen Schriftstellerin Lessie Sachs sind heute zu Unrecht nahezu in Vergessenheit geraten. Ab 1930 veröffentlichte Lessie Sachs Gedichte und Kurzprosa in renommierten Zeitungen wie der Vossischen, dem Neuen Wiener Tagblatt und dem Simplicissimus. Die Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten zerstörte ihre Hoffnungen auf eine Karriere als Schriftstellerin in Deutschland. 1937 konnte sie mit ihrem Mann, dem schlesischen Pianisten und Komponisten Josef Wagner, und der gemeinsamen Tochter nach Amerika emigrieren. 1944, zwei Jahre nach ihrem Tod, erschien in den USA die Sammlung »Tag- und Nachtgedichte« mit einem Vorwort von Heinrich Mann. Neben Reflexionen ihres politischen Engagements während der Revolution 1918/19, Erfahrungen aus der nachfolgenden Zeit im Gefängnis und ihrem Erleben des Exils sind es vor allem scharfsichtige Alltagsbeobachtungen, die Lessie Sachs bestechend elegant und pointiert zu Gedichten und Kurzprosa verarbeitet. Mit diesem Band erscheinen zahlreiche Gedichte und Prosatexte erstmals in Buchform, darunter viele bislang unveröffentlichte aus dem Nachlass. Herausgegeben und mit einem umfangreichen biografischen Porträt versehen von Christiana Puschak und Jürgen Krämer.
