Man könnte es das am besten gehütete Geheimnis des Judentums nennen, das Rabbiner Michael Hilton hier lüftet: Einige der wichtigsten Bräuche und Lehren der jüdischen Religion sind nicht Frucht einer jahrtausendealten Tradition, sondern entstanden unter dem Einfluss des Christentums. So lautet die Aufsehen erregende Erkenntnis des Autors. Bislang galt: Das Judentum ist die ältere, die "reinere" Religion, das Christentum ging aus ihm hervor und baute auf ihm auf. Die Vorstellung gegenseitigen Geben und Nehmens wirkt vor diesem Hintergrund wie ein Affront. Doch das Judentum, das wir heute kennen, ist die Religion der Rabbinen. In der Zeit dieser Gelehrten existierte das Christentum bereits, und das Judentum hat sich oft in Reaktion auf das Christentum entwickelt und verändert. Die Entstehung jüdischer Feste, die Geschichte jüdischen Brauchtums, die Messias-Vorstellung - in all diesen Bereichen bringt Hilton überraschende Tatsachen ans Licht: Schawuot, das Wochenfest, wurde erst spät mit der Offenbarung am Sinai in Verbindung gebracht als Antwort auf das christliche Pfingstfest. Die Schabbatkerzen haben ihre Wurzeln in der katholischen Tradition. Und bei Chanukka, dem Lichterfest im Winter, ist das enge Wechselspiel mit Weihnachten geradezu augenfällig.
