Klappentext: Als Textdichter von "Lili Marleen" hat Hans Leip (1893-1983) Unsterblichkeit erlangt. Und auch bei der Nennung von Titeln wie "Jan Himp und die kleine Brise" und "Hafenorgel" huscht beinahe jedem Hamburger ein Lächeln übers Gesicht. Das Werk des Autors, Malers und kulturpolitischen Impulsgebers ist jedoch viel umfangreicher und vielgestaltiger und beweist Hans Leips Bedeutung für den "Durchbruch zur Moderne". Als Mittelpunkt eines Kreises Hamburger Avantgarde-Künstler in den Zwanziger Jahren inszenierte er die legendären Künstlerfeste, erfand eine expressionistische Form des Puppenspiels und gründete innovative Vereinigungen und kreative Diskussionszirkel. Der auf zahlreichen, bisher unveröffentlichten Quellen basierenden Biografie schließt sich eine Briefedition an, die bisher nicht veröffentlichte Briefe und Postkarten Hans Leips enthält.

Rezension NZZ 2002: Die Zeiten des einst überaus erfolgreichen, insbesondere seiner "Lili Marleen" wegen berühmten Autors Hans Leip sind, mutmaßt der Rezensent Matthias Wegner, wohl ein für allemal vorbei - nicht nur wegen der positiven Haltung Leips zum Nationalsozialismus. Die nun erschienene Biografie scheint ihm dennoch von einigem Interesse. Leip war Lehrer von Beruf und galt mit seinen ersten literarischen Werken Thomas Mann und Hans Henny Jahnn als Talent. Der Erfolgshunger aber machte ihn nicht erst unter Hitler zum Opportunisten, zum Mann, der einigermaßen prinzipienlos Gegensätzliches in sich vereinigen konnte. In den zwanziger Jahren verteidigte er den von Antisemiten verfolgten Philosophen Theodor Lessing, kannte zugleich keine Berührungsängste zu den Freikorps, später schrieb er für den "Völkischen Beobachter". 1940 vertonte Norbert Schultze Leips 1915 entstandenes Gedicht "Lili Marleen", dennoch wurde er nach dem Krieg nach und nach vergessen. Der Rezensent attestiert Leip immerhin, das "Handwerk träumerischer Unterhaltung" beherrscht zu haben und dankt Rüdiger Schütt für die "einfühlsame" Darstellung der Widersprüche dieses Lebens.
