"When embarking on this handbook, the question we posed to ourselves was "What is sexuality for psychology?" Many authors of these chapters responded with some version of "everything and everywhere." That sex and sexuality have become almost perversely definitional of who humans are at this historical moment is cause for both celebration and complaint. Query it, queer it, or quell it, sexuality is an element of the human condition that demands attention and analysis. Historically, the discipline of psychology has had a fraught relationship with the complex range of human experiences encompassed by sexuality. This handbook therefore represents a watershed moment not only for the field of sexuality scholarship but also for the discipline of psychology. It represents the discipline's first comprehensive effort to define, explain, and understand human sexuality in all of its complexity, at multiple analytical levels, and to place a marker specifying what we know at this particular historical moment and, perhaps more important, what we have yet to learn. We originally conceived this handbook as one volume, but it quickly became apparent that one volume would be woefully inadequate in scope and depth. From the beginning, we have been committed to producing a handbook that is a state-of-the-art review of current empirical research on sexuality and a synthesis of the dominant theoretical perspectives that have guided both research and clinical practice. We have also been committed to representing sexuality at both a person level and a context level. Our target audience primarily includes established psychology researchers and practitioners, but the handbook is intended to be a resource for allied social and behavioral scientists, as well as professionals in complementary fields such as education, social work, public health, and public policy. Professors and graduate students in general will find the chapters in the handbook extremely valuable as supplementary text, not only for filling in their own specialty areas but also for gaining a sound familiarity with this particular field of study. Every chapter integrates an understanding of the social and cultural contexts and institutions that fundamentally organize the basic human phenomenon of sexuality. Key although not exclusive among these are race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and social class. We have called on all authors to represent these organizing forces and social locations rather than segregating these discussions to single chapters (i.e., there is no chapter on Latino sexuality or Asian American sexuality). Instead, each chapter addresses the variability associated with and shaped by various contexts and standpoints and also notes gaps in the literature stemming from the historical inattention to these factors. In each chapter, the authors also consider and convey how clinicians might use sexual knowledge in their practice, mindful of the fact that sexuality is a dimension of every single presenting patient or client, even if it is not a presenting problem. Issues of cultural location are also primary: Although the American Psychological Association's mandate concerns the United States, it is impossible to meaningfully discuss sexuality without remaining mindful of cultural variation in its development and expression and the way it has been profoundly infused by globalization. Several chapters address global concerns specifically, and most chapters include research from different parts of the world"--Introduction.
