Il y a un siècle, Maurice Maeterlinck était le premier écrivain belge à recevoir le Prix Nobel et Gand a fêté l'événement en grande pompe. Les sculptures de George Minne ont constitué pour Klimt, Kokoschka et Schiele une source d'inspiration exceptionnellement importante. Et Maeterlinck, lui aussi, voyait en Minne "le grand poète de la grande souffrance" et l'invitait régulièrement à illustrer ses livres. Minne et Maeterlinck étaient très liés: ils partageaient les mêmes pensées au point que Minne pouvait parfois se demander si celle qui lui venait n'était pas de Maeterlinck. "Art Moderne" accompagne le duo, de l'année de leur première rencontre-vers 1886-jusqu'au milieu des années 1890, lorsqu'ils quittent Gand pour Bruxelles et Paris.
