In 'A Medium Seen Otherwise', author Roger Hallas looks at how documentaries engage with photographs to argue that the formal qualities of film allow new understanding of both photography's material life and dynamics. While photographs are conventionally understood to furnish documentary film with indexical evidence and visual illustration of history, the spatio-temporal and aural dimensions of film permit documentaries to illuminate photography's wider capacities beyond the merely representational.
