Serie: Studies in Biblical Literature 97
Inhalt: Anti-Cultic Theology in Christian Biblical Interpretation challenges the widely held view that Isaiah 66:1-4 is a prophetic indictment against temple worship. Through critical analysis of representative interpretations from the Patristic Era, the writings of Martin Luther, and Modern Biblical Scholarship the book reveals the anti-cultic interpretation of these verses to be theologically motivated. The author argues instead that Isaiah 66 contrasts divine and human nature rather than cultic and spiritual worship. This work contributes to the subject of Jewish-Christian relations in a unique way, grounding the discussion of anti-Jewish interpretation of the Hebrew Bible in the analysis of a particular passage.
Inhalt: «Valerie A. Stein’s work is an important contribution both to biblical scholarship and to Jewish-Christian relations. It also offers Christians a valuable, biblically inspired opportunity to rethink certain biases against ritual that are too rarely called into question. I recommend this volume highly.» (Jon D. Levenson, Albert A. List Professor of Jewish Studies, Harvard University) «In a study with significant bearing on biblical studies, theology, and Jewish-Christian relations, Valerie A. Stein first locates Isaiah 66:1-4 within the religion of ancient Israel and then traces the migration of its meaning into the Christological debates of the patristic period and finally into the dark anti-Judaic tirades of late-Medieval/Reformation times. With both attention to textual detail and sensitivity to overarching theological issues, Stein has produced a very readable book that challenges old assumptions.» (Paul D. Hanson, Florence Corliss Lamont Professor of Divinity, Harvard University)
