The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (& sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, & covering voyages to the New World, to China & Japan, to Russia & to Africa & India. This volume translates the first detailed description of the geography & indigenous culture of South America, written by Joseph de Acosta (1540-1600) & originally published in Spanish in 1590. Acosta was one of the first explorers to record & analyse the geophysical phenomena of the 'New World' & attempt to explain them scientifically. Volume 1 contains the first four books of Joseph de Acosta's work describing the climate, plants, animals & meteorological phenomena of South America.
