"Nina Raine's play Bach & Sons is a historical drama about the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach, focussing on his turbulent relationships with his sons. It was first performed at the Bridge Theatre, London, on 29 June 2021 (previews from 23 June). The play opens with Johann Sebastian Bach, an irascible man in his fifties, composing at the harpsichord late into the night, despite his wife's request that he stop - it is keeping his young son Gottfried awake, but Bach has a deadline to meet and cannot risk disappointing his patron. Music is the family business, but the burden of his genius weighs heavily on his sons. Wilhelm is brilliant but self-destructive. Tense, industrious Carl is more successful than his father, but knows he is less talented. As the years pass, their rivalry provokes furious arguments about love, God and above all music. The premiere production was directed by Nicholas Hytner and designed by Vicki Mortimer (set), Khadija Raza (costumes), Jon Clark (lighting) and Gareth Fry (sound).
