"The Long Song is a historical drama about the final turbulent days of slavery on a sugar plantation in 19th-century Jamaica, based on Andrea Levy's 2010 novel of the same name, adapted for the stage by Suhayla El-Bushra. It was first performed at Chichester Festival Theatre on 1 October 2021. The play opens in the Jamaican house of Thomas Kinsman, a printer who learnt his trade in Britain and has since returned to his native country, where he was abandoned as a baby by his birth mother, July, a mulatto slave on the Amity sugar plantation. Thomas has invited the now-elderly July to tea, to hear her account of life on the plantation, and the eventual transition to freedom, with a view to publishing her story. July, eager to make the most of Thomas's hospitality, obliges him by telling her story, even if it is not always wholly reliable. The premiere production was directed by Charlotte Gwinner and designed by Frankie Bradshaw (set and costumes), Mark Doubleday (lighting) and Helen Skiera (sound).
