"Enda Walsh's Medicine is a dark and frequently absurdist play exploring the way our society treats those we call 'mentally ill'. It was first performed at the Traverse Theatre as part of Edinburgh International Festival on 7 August 2021, produced by Landmark Productions and Galway International Arts Festival, prior to its opening at Galway International Arts Festival on 4 September 2021. The play is set in some kind of institutional hall that has recently been used for a staff party, but is now being redeployed for a session of drama therapy that is an annual event in the treatment of a patient called John Kane. The session involves two actors (both, as it turns out, called Mary) re-enacting scenes from John's life - including his memories of parental neglect and childhood bullying - accompanied live by an onstage drummer. The premiere production was directed by Enda Walsh and designed by Jamie Vartan (set), Adam Silverman (lighting), Helen Atkinson (sound) and Joan O'Clery (costumes). It was performed by Domhnall Gleeson, Aoife Duffin and Clare Barrett, with drumming by Seán Carpio. Additional recorded voices were provided by Cathy Belton, Zara Devlin, Seannan Forde, Daniel Harrison, Toby Lavelle, Seán McGinley, Aaron Monaghan, Mikel Murfi, Tadhg Murphy, Cormac Quinlan and Marty Rea"--About the play.
