Dawn King's play The Trials is a near-future courtroom drama addressing the climate emergency and intergenerational conflict, as a jury of 12 to 17-year-olds sit in judgment over three adult defendants for the crimes they are alleged to have committed against the planet. It was first performed at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus on 15 January 2022, and was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. It received its British premiere at the Donmar Warehouse, London, on 12 August 2022. The near future. The climate emergency is gathering pace, and our generation is being judged. The jurors are children. But are they delivering justice - or just taking revenge? The Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus production was directed by Adrian Figueroa with set and costume design by Irina Schicketanz. It was performed by Ayla Tatu Burnaz, Pia Dix, Despina Economou, Robert Meyer García, Leander Hesse, Greta Kolb, Len Königs, Humam Mohamad, Ji-Hun Park, Maja Pindek Rabrenović, Sirha Schroeder-Finckh, Charlotte Wirth, Alexander Steindorf, Markus Danzeisen and Anya Fischer. The Donmar Warehouse production was directed by Natalie Abrahami and designed by Georgia Lowe. It was performed by Elise Alexandre, Francis Dourado, Jowana El-Daouk, William Gao, Pelumi Ibiloye, Honor Kneafsey, Joe Locke, Rue Millwood, Charlie Reid, Meréana Jean Tomlinson, Taya Tower, Jairaj Varsani, Nigel Lindsay, Lucy Cohu and Sharon Small.
