Gillian Slovo's Grenfell: in the words of survivors is a verbatim play about the Grenfell Tower fire of 2017, drawn from the testimony of residents - a group of survivors and bereaved - at the heart of the tragedy. It explores the courage and resilience of an ill-treated community and their long-running campaign for justice. It reveals the impact of the multiple failures that led to the most devastating residential fire in the UK since the Second World War, and asks: how do we stop this ever happening again? Created from interviews by Gillian Slovo, the play was first performed in the Dorfman auditorium of the National Theatre, London, on 20 July 2023 (previews from 13 July). In an Introduction to the published text (Nick Hern Books, 2023), Gillian Slovo writes: '[The reason] I, and the National Theatre, set out to produce this play [was because] we wanted to let the words of the survivors and bereaved ring out on a public stage. This is a verbatim play, which means that it is based on the words from interviews I have made, along with extracts from the [government's Public Inquiry] or from the public record. Over the time that I have worked on this play I interviewed many people - survivors, bereaved, witnesses, experts and others - to collect the raw materials for the text. I couldn't use everybody I interviewed, but everybody I spoke to helped me understand what had happened at Grenfell Tower. The words I did use, with the interviewees' permission, are heavily edited but always with the aim of keeping the actual words and their meaning.' The premiere production was co-directed by Phyllida Lloyd and Anthony Simpson-Pike, with set and costume design by Georgia Lowe and lighting design by Azusa Ono. It was performed by Joe Alessi, Gaz Choudhry, Jackie Clune, Houda Echouafni, Sarah Slimani, Keaton Guimarães-Tolley, Ash Hunter, Pearl Mackie, Rachid Sabitri, Michael Shaeffer, Nahel Tzegai and Lisa Zahra.
