Jagdverband 44 secures its inclusion in this series by virtue of the fact that its story is unique, from its inception in February 1945 amidst political dissent within the leadership of the Luftwaffe, to its surrender. Led by General Adolf Galland, the squadron was equipped with the world's first operational jet fighter, in the form of the Me 262, and included many of Germany's leading aces within its ranks. JV 44 fought numerous air battles with US medium bomber units over southern Germany and Austria in the final months of World War 2, and these actions are detailed in this volume through firsthand accounts, rare archive photos and specially commissioned artwork.
