In den evangelischen Kirchen des Landkreises Prignitz gibt es mehr als 300 Gedächtnismale für die Befreiungskriege 1813-1815, die Reichseinigungskriege 1864, 1866 und 1870/71, den Ersten Weltkrieg 1914-1918 und den Zweiten Weltkrieg 1939-1945. Während Kriegergedächtnismale auf Friedhöfen und im kommunalen Raum vergleichsweise gut erforscht sind, wurden die Gedächtnismale in den Gotteshäusern dagegen bislang nahezu übersehen. Das Buch stellt ihre Entwicklungsgeschichte am Beispiel der Prignitz vor. Es wird gefragt, wer sie zu welchem Zweck gestiftet hat und welche Botschaften sie vermitteln. Dienten sie der Kriegs- und Heldenverherrlichung oder der Mahnung und Trauer? Wie wurde mit ihnen der Krieg in Friedenszeiten verarbeitet? Wer waren die Auftraggeber und Hersteller? Wie und wo wurden die Denkmäler im Kirchenraum präsentiert? Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Frage, ob nach 1945 bei der Gestaltung von Gedächtnismalen für den Zweiten Weltkrieg neue Wege in der christlichen Erinnerungskultur beschritten wurden. Lässt sich ein Unterschied zwischen Denkmälern ausmachen, die zu DDR-Zeiten bis 1990 entstanden sind, und denen, die danach angeschafft wurden? Nicht zuletzt wird der Umgang mit den alten Kriegerdedächtnismalen nach 1945 beleuchtet. Kriegergedächtnismale in Kirchen polarisieren. Das Buch möchte zur Aufklärung über diese schwierige Denkmalgruppe beitragen und so eine kritische, sachliche Aneignung befördern helfen.
