Um 1138 schrieb Geoffrey von Monmouth seine Historia regum Britanniae, die erste Darstellung der Artuslegende. Darin eingelegt sind die dunklen, bildgesättigten Aussprüche des Zauberers und Propheten Merlin. Teils behandeln sie die Vergangenheit der Britischen Inseln, teils sind sie Weissagungen auf ihre Zukunft. Sogleich zeigte sich das Bedürfnis, sie auszudeuten. Unter den zahlreichen Kommentaren ist die Explanatio in prophetia Merlini Ambrosii (um 1170) der umfassendste. Darin werden auch die Weissagungen auf die damalige Zukunft interpretiert. Als Urheber dieser umfangreichen Schrift gilt ein gewisser Alanus, gebürtig von Lille, später Bischof von Auxerre. Konkret wird darin auf das anglonormannische Königtum – auch in seinen Beziehungen zu Frankreich – eingegangen, auf die dynastischen Kämpfe und das Verhältnis von Kirche und weltlicher Macht. Die Sitten der Zeit werden gegeisselt: das Hofleben, die Priesterehe, ferner Zauberei und Aberglaube. Der Text, bisher nur in Drucken des 17. Jahrhunderts zugänglich, wird im vorliegenden Werk erstmals kritisch ediert, in eine moderne Sprache übersetzt und im Hinblick auf seine historischen, geistesgeschichtlichen und literarischen Belange kommentiert.
