Mit diesem Handbuch zur Soldatenkaiserzeit (235–284) wird erstmals eine umfassende Gesamtdarstellung des Römischen Reiches in der Mitte des 3. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. vorgelegt. Diese Krisenepoche war von zahlreichen Einfällen auswärtiger Gegner, häufigen Thronwechseln und inneren Konflikten gekennzeichnet. Zugleich vollzogen sich aber auch vielfältige Transformationsprozesse in den Institutionen des Staates und den Strukturen der Gesellschaft. Neben einer ausführlichen Darstellung der Ereignisse bietet das Handbuch auch einen Überblick zu den Völkern und Reichen an den Grenzen Roms, Beiträge zu den Entwicklungen in Staat und Gesellschaft, in der Wirtschaft, der Geistesgeschichte und den Religionen. Die Anmerkungen ermöglichen sowohl eine schnelle Erschließung der antiken Zeugnisse als auch eine Übersicht zur aktuellen Forschung, die mittlerweile nur noch schwer zu überschauen ist.
