Hegels Philosophie der Kunst knüpft an eine seinerzeit junge, erst Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts von Baumgarten begründete Tradition der Ästhetik als philosophischer Disziplin an. Im Mittelpunkt seiner seit 1817 in der Enzyklopädie skizzierten und in seinen Heidelberger und Berliner Vorlesungen ausgeführten Philosophie der Kunst steht die "Idee des Schönen". Jedes Kunstwerk verwirklicht als Schönes eine Einheit des Begriffs und seiner Realität im sinnlichen Scheinen. Diese Einheit wird jedoch dort brüchig, wo das Selbstbewusstsein des Geistes seinem Begriff adäquat wird und über den sinnlichen Schein hinausgeht. Die Schönheit ist daher eine in sich gebrochene, die das Selbstbewusstsein des Geistes letztlich nicht gültig darzustellen vermag. Hegels vieldiskutierte These vom "Ende der Kunst" ist nur eine Konsequenz dieser geistesphilosophischen Begründung der Ästhetik. Sowohl diese Begründung als auch die Fokussierung der Philosophie der Kunst auf die Idee des Schönen werfen eine Reihe systematischer Probleme auf, die in dem vorliegenden Band im Blick auf Hegels Ästhetik, ihre historischen Kontexte und ihre Rezeptionen diskutiert werden.
