Schulte Nordholt hat sich sehr überzeugend der äußerst anspruchsvollen Aufgabe gewidmet, einen Überblick über die Geschichte Südostasiens, also einer ethnisch, religiös, sprachlich und wirtschaftlich sehr heterogenen Region zu geben. Auf gut 550 Seiten gelingt es ihm, eine auch für Einsteiger gut lesbare, auf wesentliche Ereignisse und Entwicklungen beschränkte Historiografie zu verfassen (vgl. als Einführung: "Südostasien-Handbuch", ID-B 49/99). Der Autor beschreibt die Entstehung und das Verschwinden zahlloser kleiner und größerer Königreiche im festländischen und, vor allem, insularen Teil Südostasiens und die nicht nur religiösen Einflüsse aus China, Indien, dem arabischen Raum und Europa. Es folgen Teile über die Kolonialzeit und die Entwicklungen in den Nationalstaaten. - Das Buch besticht durch einen souveränen Umgang mit der überbordenden Fachliteratur.
