Im neuen Roman des bekannten afghanischen Autors (zuletzt "Tausend strahlende Sonnen", BA 10/07) zieht 1952 ein Bewohner eines entlegenen Dorfes mit seiner Tochter Pari und seinem Sohn Abdullah nach Kabul, wo ihm ein Verwandter einen Job bei einem reichen Afghanen, der mit einer Französin verheiratet ist, verschafft. Die Französin adoptiert Pari und zieht mit ihr nach dem Tod ihres Mannes nach Paris, wo sie Gedichte schreibt. Auf der Suche nach ihrer Herkunft findet Pari Jahrzehnte später ihren Bruder in den USA, doch der erkennt sie wegen seiner fortgeschrittenen Demenz nicht. Um diesen Haupterzählstrang legt der Autor weitere, die das Schicksal Afghanistans v.a. seit den 1950er-Jahren verdeutlichen. U.a. stiehlt ein korrupter Regierungsfunktionär das Eigentum von Afghanen, die in den Flüchtlingslagern in Pakistan lebten. Ausländische Ärzte engagieren sich für die arme Bevölkerung. Das komplexe Gebilde überzeugt durch glaubwürdige Charaktere, die oft in tragische Situationen geraten. Das inhaltlich und literarisch gelungene Buch sollte in keiner Bibliothek fehlen.

Der Vater der 3-jährigen Pari und ihres 10-jährigen Bruders Abdullah bringt die beiden Kinder aus einem kleinen afghanischen Dorf quer durch die Wüste nach Kabul, wo die Geschwister getrennt werden. Dieser herzzerreißende Schmerz wird sie ihr Leben lang begleiten, bis sie sich im Alter wiederfinden.
