Die Serbin Sara ist nach Dublin ausgewandert. Ihre Mutter hat sie schon seit Jahren nicht mehr gesehen, ihre einst beste Freundin Lejla auch nicht. Da kommt ein Anruf von Lejla, mit dem sie Sara nach Mostar beordert. Sie müsse mit ihr nach Wien fahren, weil dort Lejlas verschollener Bruder Armin lebe. In den war Sara als Jugendliche verliebt gewesen. Die Gegenwartshandlung, eine Fahrt im klapprigen Opel von Mostar nach Wien, ist durchzogen von Rückblenden in die Kindheit und Jugend der beiden jungen Frauen. Sie werfen Schlaglichter auf die inzwischen brüchig gewordene Freundschaft der beiden, in der auch früher längst nicht alles so eindeutig war, wie es auf den 1. Blick scheint. Geprägt von subtilen Machtkämpfen untereinander, von Krieg und ethnischen Konflikten (Lejla ist Bosnierin), schildert der Roman in rasanter Sprache die Befindlichkeiten und Sehnsüchte der beiden jungen Frauen aus der Perspektive von Ich-Erzählerin Sara. Er verwebt die Konflikte des zerfallenen Jugoslawien mit dem Coming-of-Age der Protagonistinnen. Breite Empfehlung bereits für etwas größere Bestände.
