Der vorliegene Band enthält die schriftstellerische Bilanz aus Wielands höchst produktiver Zeit als Professor der Erfurter Universität. Seine Beschäftigung mit den kulturkritischen Ansätzen von Rousseau und Iselin verarbeitet er in essayistischen Prosawerken, die seine philosophischen Reflexionen in höchst eleganten Formen aufbereitet zeigen. Mit den Dialogen des Diogenes von Sinope (1770), die - bald schon ins Französische übersetzt - Diderot beeindrucken sollten, liefert Wieland eine erste Summe seines philosophischen und politischen Denkens. In der Aufsatzsammlung Beyträge zur Geheimen Geschichte des menschlichen Verstandes und Herzens (1770) und seiner bislang weitgehend vernachlässigten ästhetischen Programmschrift Die Grazien (ebenfalls 1770) setzt er sich mit zeitgenössischen Kulturtheorien auseinander und entwirft ein auf Kultivierung der Sinnlichkeit abzielendes Lebenskunst-Konzept.Der Verskünstler ist mit seinem komischen Ritterepos Der Neue Amadis (1771) vertreten, dessen virtuos-launige Verse, labyrinthische Strukturen und überbordender Anspielungsreichtum es zu einem der eindrucksvollsten, wohl aber auch schwierigsten Werke Wielands machen.
