Content: Mythen dienen der Selbstverständigung. Ihre Deutung, aber auch Umwertung prägt die Diskurse über Kultur. Mythen verstehen sich somit als kulturelle Substanzen, die immer wieder neu befragbar, um- oder überformbar sind. Ihr ästhetisches, soziales, aber auch politisch-ideologisches Potenzial bedarf kritischer Überprüfung; es verlangt aber auch nach vergleichenden Untersuchungen, zumal dann, wenn diese Mythen für die kulturellen Wechselbeziehungen zwischen zwei Ländern so maßgeblich (gewesen) sind wie im Falle Britanniens und Deutschlands. In diesen Beziehungen stehen neben der Wahrheit der Mythen auch die Wirklichkeit der Vorurteile, nicht minder aber Versuche, auf das jeweils Andere konstruktiv einzugehen. Angelsächsische und deutschsprachige Mythentheorien werden in diesem Band ebenso einander gegenüber gestellt wie exemplarische Ausprägungen der Mythen in Literatur, Kulturtheorie und bildender Kunst. Dabei werden die ästhetischen wie politischen Implikationen mythenbewusster Ausdrucksformen ebenso berücksichtigt wie motivgeschichtliche Ansätze und die Frage nach dem, was die "Gegenwärtigkeit des Mythos" in beiden Kulturen bedeutet und wie sie das britisch-deutsche Verhältnis weiterhin konditioniert.
