Inhalt: Der Rang eines Bauwerks ergibt sich nicht allein aus Proportion und Konstruktion, Form oder Farbe. Die Frage, ob ein Haus glückt oder mißrät, wird auch abseits der Baustellen beantwortet: auf all jenen Schauplätzen, an denen gesellschaftliche Kräfte wirken und den Rahmen des Bauens vorgeben. Die Architektur mag die „Mutter aller Künste“ sein – aber sie ist doch das Kind der Gesellschaft, in der sie entsteht. Gerhard Matzig, 45, ist seit 15 Jahren für die Süddeutsche Zeitung als Architekturkritiker tätig. Seine Texte thematisieren nur in Ausnahmefällen Bauten als Bauten. Immer geht es dem Autor um die Frage, unter welchen Bedingungen sich Baukultur ereignet – oder auch nicht. Die in den – durchweg im Feuilleton der Süddeutschen Zeitung erschienenen – Texte thematisieren den Untergang des einst so glamourösen Berufsbildes „Architekt“, die Verspektakelisierung der Welt mit Hilfe der Star-Architektur oder die Verelendung des noch immer öffentlich genannten Raumes.

Inhalt: The book studies the past of the characters in Aeschylus and Sophocles, a neglected but crucial topic. The characters' beliefs, values, and emotions bear on their view of the past. This view reinforces their beliefs and their conception of themselves and others as agents of free will and members of a family and/or community. The study reveals that, although the characters' idea of the past is fixed, the impact of the past is not. The characters consider, review, and construct narratives of it, as they seek to mould a future they perceive as morally just for themselves and others.

Inhalt: Dionysos erscheint innerhalb der modernen Wissens- und Darstellungsformationen oft als untypisch für die antike Kultur, als Ausnahme im Kontext des antiken Polytheismus, ja als Instanz einer Differenz, die die Moderne antizipiert. Was können neuere Forschungen zum genaueren Verständnis der vielfältigen Transformationen des antiken Gottes beitragen? Dieser Frage widmen sich Vertreter aller Bereiche der Altertumswissenschaften in diesem Band, der aus einer internationalen Tagung im März 2009 im Berliner Pergamonmuseum hervorgeht. Eine vergleichbare Publikation liegt bisher weder in deutscher oder englischer noch in anderen Sprachen vor. Zu den in dem Band behandelten Themen gehören aktuelle Forschungsfragen - einschließlich wissenschaftsgeschichtlicher Aspekte - zur Stellung des Dionysos im Rahmen der antiken griechischen und römischen Religion von den Anfängen bis zur Spätantike (Riten und Festkultur, Mythen, Epiphaniekonzepte, Theaterpraxis, Architektur und Ökonomie der Heiligtümer), anhand von - zum Teil neuentdeckten - epigraphischen, literarischen, bildkünstlerischen, historiographischen und philosophischen Quellen.

Inhalt: Within modern frameworks of knowledge and representation, Dionysos often appears to be atypical for ancient culture, an exception within the context of ancient polytheism, or even an instance of a difference that anticipates modernism. How can recent research contribute to a more precise understanding of the diverse transformations of the ancient god, from Greek antiquity to the Roman Empire? In this volume, which is the result of an international conference held in March 2009 at the Pergamon Museum Berlin, scholars from all branches of classical studies, including history of scholarship, consider this question. Consequently, this leads to a new look on vase paintings, sanctuaries, rituals and religious-political institutions like theatre, and includes new readings of the texts of ancient poets, historians and philosophers, as well as of papyri and inscriptions. It is the diversity of sources or methods and the challenge of former views that is the strength of this volume, providing a comprehensive, innovative and richly faceted account of the "different" god in an unprecedented way.

Inhalt: So far, the critical writings of Dionysius of Halicarnassus have mainly attracted interest from historians of ancient linguistics. The Ideology of Classicism proposes a novel approach to Dionysius' œuvre as a whole by providing the first systematic study of Greek classicism from the perspective of cultural identity. Drawing on cultural anthropology and Social Identity Theory, Wiater explores the world-view bound up with classicist criticism. Only from within this ideological framework can we understand why Greek and Roman intellectuals in Augustan Rome strove to speak and write like Demosthenes, Lysias, and Isocrates. Topics addressed by this study include Dionysius' view of the classical past; mimesis and the aesthetics of reading; language and identity; Dionysius' view of the Romans, their power and the role of Greek culture within it; Greek classicism and the contemporary controversy about Roman identity among Roman intellectuals; the self-image as Greek intellectuals in the Roman empire of Dionysius and his addressees; the dialogic design of Dionysius' essays and how it implements a sense of elitism and distinction; Dionysius' attitudes towards communities competing with him for leadership in rhetorical education and criticism, such as the Peripatetics and Stoics.

Inhalt: Dass ein Subjekt einen privilegierten epistemischen Zugang zu den eigenen mentalen Zuständen hat, scheint eine alltägliche Selbstverständlichkeit zu sein. Wer immer Gedanken, Gefühle, Wahrnehmungen, Wünsche oder Empfindungen hat, weiß auch, dass er selbst diese Zustände hat. Als philosophische These galt das Wissen des Selbstbewusstseins aufgrund seiner besonderen Struktur und Funktion lange als geeignetes Fundament, um generelle Wissensansprüche über die Welt und die Subjekte, die in ihr leben, zu begründen. Die Autorin setzt sich mit zeitgenössischen und historischen Selbstbewusstseinstheorien und mit verschiedenen intersubjektivitätstheoretischen Ansätzen auseinander. Sie verteidigt auf Grundlage dessen die These, dass eine intersubjektive Beziehung zwischen mindestens zwei Personen eine notwendige Voraussetzung dafür ist, dass ein Subjekt Selbstbewusstsein haben kann. Der systematische Zugang des Buches beinhaltet die Diskussion einer Vielzahl von Theorien und Theoremen, u.a. die Debatte zwischen Tugendhat, Henrich und Frank, Nagels These vom objektiven Selbst, Perrys Analyse von Überzeugungen de se als reflexiven Einstellungen, Meads Theorie der Perspektivenübernahme, die Grammatik des Ausdrucks ,ich' und die Herausforderung, die der semantische Externalismus für das Wissen von den eigenen mentalen Zuständen darstellt.

Inhalt: Whoever has thoughts, feelings, perceptions, wishes or impressions also knows that he himself has these states. This assumption has a long history in philosophical discussion of self-consciousness. But what conditions must be fulfilled for such knowledge to be possible? This book argues that self-consciousness is only possible under conditions of intersubjectivity.

Inhalt: Since Terzaghi's edition (1939) no new relevant data were found illustrating the textual history of the Synesian poetic corpus from Late Antiquity to the Palaeologan Byzantium. Thanks to a new inspection of the main manuscripts and the enucleation of thematic and structural incoherencies, hitherto unnoticed, it seems possible to restore the structure of the hymnodic corpus as it was before its original pattern was damaged and modified by late Byzantine editors. Specific researches are devoted to: (1) the displacement of the ninth hymn (originally intended to open the hymns series); (2) the beginning of a new hymn with the last verses of the ninth; (3) the merging of two hymns into what is now the first hymn and a new assessment of the last part of the same piece (according to the Neoplatonic theory of the soul); (4) the real purpose and nature of the hymns 6-8 (uncorrectly considered "tout court" as christological), and the original structure of the eighth hymn (to be divided in two different poems). Moreover, the study of ancient and late antique metrical and musical theories reveals hitherto unexpected features about both production and performance of Synesius' hymns.
